What dua should I say before travelling?

When boarding any vehicle say: 'Subhana alladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun' (Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14) — 'Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have subdued it ourselves. And to our Lord we shall certainly return.' Then say Allahu Akbar 3 times and Subhanallah 3 times.

Can I shorten prayers while travelling in Islam?

Yes. A traveller (musafir) who travels 77–85 km (48–53 miles) or more may shorten 4-rak'ah prayers to 2 rak'ahs (qasr). Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha are shortened. Fajr (2 rak'ahs) and Maghrib (3 rak'ahs) are not shortened. They may also combine Dhuhr+Asr and Maghrib+Isha. Sunnah prayers are optional during travel.

What do I say when arriving at a new place?

When stopping at any place, recite: 'A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created) — whoever says this, nothing will harm them until they leave that place. (Muslim)

Is the dua of a traveller quickly accepted?

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned the du'a of the traveller as one of the duas that is not refused (Tirmidhi). Along with the dua of the oppressed and the dua of a parent for their child, the traveller's supplication has special acceptance. Take advantage of travel time with abundance of dhikr and dua.

Sahih Muslim — Dua when riding/boarding

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ

Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqaliboon

Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we were not capable of that, and indeed to our Lord we will return.

When to recite: When boarding any vehicle — car, plane, bus, train, ship. The Prophet ﷺ recited this at the start of every journey.

Sahih Muslim — Travel dua

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَٰذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَىٰ اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَٰذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ

Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadha al-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-'amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha watwi 'anna bu'dahu

O Allah, we ask You on this journey for righteousness, taqwa, and deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance.

When to recite: At the start of a long journey. The Prophet ﷺ would recite this when setting out on travel.

Abu Dawud — Dua when entering a town

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَظْلَلْنَ وَرَبَّ الْأَرَضِينَ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَقْلَلْنَ وَرَبَّ الرِّيَاحِ وَمَا ذَرَيْنَ أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ هَٰذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ وَخَيْرَ أَهْلِهَا وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ أَهْلِهَا

Allahumma Rabbas-samaawatis-sab'i wa ma adhlaln, wa Rabbal-aradinas-sab'i wa ma aqlaln, wa Rabbar-riyahi wa ma dharayn, as'aluka khayra hadhihil-qaryati wa khayra ahliha, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all they shade, Lord of the seven earths and all they bear, Lord of the winds and all they scatter — I ask You for the good of this town and its people, and seek refuge from its evil and the evil of its people.

When to recite: When arriving at a new city, town or destination.

Sahih Muslim — Dua upon returning

آيِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ عَابِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ

Ayibuna, ta'ibuna, 'abiduna, li Rabbina hamidun

We are returning, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord.

When to recite: When returning home from a journey. The Prophet ﷺ would repeat this upon arrival.
