Zakat is the third pillar of Islam — an obligatory charity of 2.5% on wealth held above the Nisab threshold for one full lunar year (hawl).

❓ Frequently Asked Questions about Zakat
How much is Zakat?
Zakat is 2.5% (1/40th) of your net zakatable wealth that has been held for one full lunar year above the Nisab threshold.
What is the Nisab for Zakat in 2026?
The Nisab equals 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Based on current gold prices, the gold Nisab is approximately €7,200. Many scholars recommend using the silver Nisab for a lower threshold to help more people.
Is Zakat due on cryptocurrency?
Yes, most contemporary scholars agree that cryptocurrency is zakatable like cash. If you hold crypto above the Nisab for one lunar year, you owe 2.5% Zakat on its market value at the time of calculation.
Do I pay Zakat on my house or car?
No. Personal-use assets (your home, car, furniture, clothes) are not zakatable. Only wealth held for investment or trade is subject to Zakat.
When should I pay Zakat?
Zakat is due after your wealth has been above the Nisab for one full lunar year (hawl). Many Muslims choose to pay during Ramadan for extra reward, but it can be paid anytime once the conditions are met.
What is the difference between Zakat and Zakat al-Fitr?
Zakat is 2.5% on accumulated wealth above the Nisab. Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) is a fixed amount per person paid before Eid al-Fitr prayer regardless of wealth — it purifies the fast of Ramadan.
Is Zakat on gold jewellery obligatory?
There is a scholarly difference: the Hanafi opinion is that Zakat is due on all gold and silver, even personal jewellery. The Shafi'i and Hanbali view exempts personal-use jewellery. Consult your local scholar.
