How to Pray in Islam — Complete Guide

Complete beginner's guide to Salah — the 5 daily prayers

🕌 5 Daily Prayers 📖 Step by Step 🤲 With Arabic Duas 💚 For Beginners

📋 Before You Start

🕌 What is Salah?

Salah is the Islamic prayer performed five times a day. It is the second pillar of Islam and the most important act of worship after the declaration of faith (Shahada). Salah is a direct connection between the worshipper and Allah, involving specific physical movements and recitations from the Quran.

🤔 Why do Muslims pray 5 times a day?

The five daily prayers were prescribed during the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ night journey (Isra and Mi'raj). They serve as spiritual checkpoints throughout the day — at dawn, midday, afternoon, sunset, and night — keeping believers connected to Allah and mindful of their purpose. Prayer brings peace, discipline, and closeness to God.

✅ What do you need before praying?

1. Wudu (Ablution): Ritual purification by washing specific body parts with water.
2. Clean Place: A clean surface to pray on — a prayer mat is ideal but not required.
3. Qibla Direction: Face towards the Kaaba in Makkah.
4. Appropriate Clothing: Cover the awrah — for men from navel to knees; for women, the entire body except face and hands.
5. Intention (Niyyah): Intend in your heart which prayer you are about to perform.

💧 Step-by-Step Wudu (Ablution)

Wudu is required before every prayer. Click each step to expand.

1 Intention (Niyyah)

Begin by making the intention in your heart to perform wudu for the sake of Allah. Say "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah) before starting. The intention does not need to be spoken aloud — it is a matter of the heart.

2 Wash hands 3 times

Wash both hands up to the wrists thoroughly, three times each. Start with the right hand, then the left. Make sure water reaches between the fingers and under any rings.

3 Rinse mouth 3 times

Take water into your right hand and rinse your mouth thoroughly three times. Swish the water around your mouth to clean it completely, then spit it out. Using a miswak or toothbrush before wudu is recommended (Sunnah).

4 Clean nose 3 times

Sniff water into your nostrils using your right hand three times, then blow it out using your left hand. This ensures the nasal passage is clean.

5 Wash face 3 times

Wash your entire face three times — from the hairline to the chin, and from ear to ear. Make sure water reaches every part of the face including the eyebrows and the beard area.

6 Wash arms to elbows 3 times

Wash your right arm from fingertips to the elbow three times, ensuring water covers every part. Then wash the left arm the same way. The elbows must be included in the washing.

7 Wipe head once

Wet your hands and wipe your entire head from front to back and back to front, once. This is called Masah. Use both hands starting from the forehead, moving to the back of the head, and then returning.

8 Clean ears

Using the same moisture from wiping the head, clean the inside of both ears with your index fingers and the outside with your thumbs. This is done once.

9 Wash feet 3 times

Wash your right foot up to the ankle three times, making sure water passes between all the toes. Then wash the left foot the same way. After completing wudu, recite the Shahada: "Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh".

🤲 Step-by-Step Rakaat Guide

Each rakaat (unit of prayer) follows these steps. This is what you say and do in each position.

1

Niyyah — Intention

Stand facing the Qibla (direction of Makkah). Form the intention in your heart — for example: "I intend to pray 2 rakaat of Fajr for Allah." The intention is in the heart, not spoken aloud.
2

Takbiratul Ihram — Opening Takbeer

"Allahu Akbar"
Allah is the Greatest
Raise both hands up to your ears (men) or shoulders (women) with palms facing the Qibla. Say "Allahu Akbar" and then place your right hand over your left hand on your chest. This begins the prayer — from this point, you cannot talk, eat, or look around.
3

Qiyam — Standing (Recite Al-Fatiha)

While standing, start with the opening supplication (Du'a al-Istiftah), then say "A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajeem, Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem" and recite Surah Al-Fatiha:
📖 Surah Al-Fatiha (The Opening)
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem. Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil 'alameen. Ar-Rahmanir Raheem. Maliki yawmid-deen. Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'een. Ihdinas-siratal mustaqeem. Siratal-ladhina an'amta 'alayhim, ghayril maghdubi 'alayhim wa lad-daalleen. Ameen.
After Al-Fatiha, say "Ameen", then recite another short surah (e.g., Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, or An-Nas). This second surah is recited in the first 2 rakaat only.
4

Ruku — Bowing

"Subhana Rabbiyal Azeem"
Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great
Say 3 times
Say "Allahu Akbar" and bow down, placing your hands on your knees with fingers spread. Keep your back straight and parallel to the ground. Your head should be in line with your back — not raised up or hanging down.
5

I'tidal — Standing from Ruku

"Sami' Allahu liman hamidah"
Allah hears the one who praises Him
"Rabbana wa lakal hamd"
Our Lord, to You belongs all praise
Rise from bowing to a full standing position. Say the first phrase while rising, then say the second phrase once you are standing upright. Stand still momentarily before moving to prostration.
6

Sujud — Prostration

"Subhana Rabbiyal A'la"
Glory be to my Lord, the Most High
Say 3 times
Say "Allahu Akbar" and go down into prostration. Seven body parts must touch the ground: forehead with nose, both palms, both knees, and the toes of both feet. This is the closest a servant is to Allah — make extra du'a here.
7

Jalsah — Sitting between Sujud

"Rabbighfir li"
My Lord, forgive me
Say 2 times
Say "Allahu Akbar" and sit upright with your left foot flat under you and your right foot upright with toes pointing towards the Qibla. Place your hands on your thighs. Sit calmly for a moment.
8

Second Sujud — Second Prostration

"Subhana Rabbiyal A'la"
Glory be to my Lord, the Most High
Say 3 times
Say "Allahu Akbar" and prostrate again exactly as the first sujud. After this, one full rakaat is complete. Say "Allahu Akbar" and stand up for the next rakaat, or if it is the final rakaat, remain seated for Tashahhud.
9

Tashahhud — Testification of Faith

"At-Tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat. As-salamu 'alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-saliheen. Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh."
All greetings, prayers and good things are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.
Sit with your left foot flat and right foot upright. Place hands on thighs. Raise your right index finger when saying "la ilaha illallah." In the final Tashahhud, also recite the Salawat (Ibrahimiyyah) and then make du'a before ending the prayer.
📖 Salawat Ibrahimiyyah (recited in final Tashahhud)
10

Tasleem — Ending the Prayer

"Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah"
Peace and mercy of Allah be upon you
Say 2 times (right, then left)
Turn your head to the right and say "Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah", then turn to the left and repeat. This completes the prayer. After finishing, it is Sunnah to say "Astaghfirullah" 3 times and then recite Ayatul Kursi and the morning/evening adhkar.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How many times do Muslims pray a day?

Muslims pray 5 obligatory prayers every day: Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (noon), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), and Isha (night). In total, the five prayers consist of 17 obligatory rakaat. Additionally, there are voluntary (Sunnah) prayers that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regularly performed.

What do Muslims say during prayer?

During prayer, Muslims recite verses from the Quran in Arabic, primarily Surah Al-Fatiha (the opening chapter) in every rakaat. They also say specific phrases in each position: "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) for transitions, "Subhana Rabbiyal Azeem" while bowing, "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" while prostrating, and the Tashahhud while sitting. The prayer ends with "Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah."

Can I pray in English instead of Arabic?

The obligatory parts of prayer (Surah Al-Fatiha, Tashahhud, etc.) should be recited in Arabic, as this is how the Prophet ﷺ taught it. However, as a new Muslim or beginner, many scholars say you may pray in your own language while you are still learning the Arabic. The key is to make sincere effort to learn the Arabic recitations. Personal du'a (supplication) during sujud can be made in any language.

What if I miss a prayer?

If you miss a prayer due to sleep or forgetfulness, you should pray it as soon as you remember. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, the expiation for it is to pray it when he remembers it." (Bukhari & Muslim). Intentionally missing prayers is a serious sin in Islam and should be avoided. Make it up as soon as possible and ask Allah for forgiveness.

How do I know which direction to face (Qibla)?

Muslims face the Kaaba in Makkah, Saudi Arabia during prayer. You can use our Qibla Finder tool which uses your phone's compass and GPS to show you the exact direction. You can also use smartphone apps, a physical compass, or ask at your local mosque.

Do I need to pray at the exact time?

Each prayer has a time window, not a single exact moment. For example, Dhuhr can be prayed from when the sun passes its zenith until the shadow of an object equals its length. It is best to pray as early as possible in the time window. Check our Prayer Times page for accurate daily times based on your location.

What breaks your wudu (ablution)?

Wudu is broken by: 1) Anything exiting from the front or back passage (including wind), 2) Deep sleep or loss of consciousness, 3) Bleeding from a wound (according to some schools), 4) Vomiting a mouthful. If your wudu is broken, you must perform it again before praying.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rakats are in each daily prayer?
Fajr has 2 fard rakats. Dhuhr has 4 fard rakats. Asr has 4 fard rakats. Maghrib has 3 fard rakats. Isha has 4 fard rakats. In addition, each prayer has sunnah rakats performed before or after the obligatory rakats.
Do I have to learn Arabic to pray?
The obligatory parts of salah — such as Surah Al-Fatiha and the tashahhud — must be recited in Arabic. However, your personal duas (supplications) can be made in any language. Most beginners start by learning the Arabic phrases phonetically and gradually improve their understanding.
What should I do if I miss a prayer?
Missed prayers (qada) must be made up as soon as possible. If you miss a prayer unintentionally due to sleep or forgetfulness, pray it as soon as you wake up or remember. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever forgets a prayer, let him pray it when he remembers it." (Bukhari & Muslim)
Can I pray if I don't have wudu?
No. Wudu (ritual purification) is an obligatory prerequisite for salah. If water is unavailable or its use would cause harm, you may perform tayammum (dry ablution with clean earth or dust) as a substitute. See our Wudu Guide for step-by-step instructions.
Which direction do I face when praying?
Muslims face the Qibla — the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Use our Qibla Finder to determine the exact direction from your location. If you are unable to determine the exact direction, use your best judgment; your prayer is still valid.
Is it okay for women to pray the same way as men?
The steps of salah are largely the same for men and women. Some scholars note minor differences in certain positions (such as keeping elbows closer to the body in sujud), based on scholarly opinion. The core pillars, recitations, and number of rakats are identical.
What are the prayer times for each salah?
Fajr begins at true dawn and ends at sunrise. Dhuhr begins when the sun passes its zenith and ends at mid-afternoon. Asr runs from mid-afternoon until just before sunset. Maghrib begins at sunset and lasts until the red twilight disappears. Isha begins after twilight and continues until midnight (or until Fajr, though praying before midnight is strongly recommended).
