Istikhara Dua — Complete Guide to Seeking Allah's Guidance

Learn how to pray Salat al-Istikhara: the full dua in Arabic with transliteration and translation, step-by-step method, and answers to common questions.

What Is Istikhara?

Istikhara (اسْتِخَارَة) means "seeking goodness" from Allah. It is a Sunnah prayer and dua that the Prophet ﷺ taught his companions to perform before making any important decision — from marriage and jobs to travel and studies. Jabir ibn Abdullah reported:

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us Istikhara for all matters, just as he would teach us a surah from the Quran." — Sahih al-Bukhari 1166

How to Pray Istikhara — Step by Step

1

Make Wudu

Perform ablution as you would for any prayer. Ensure you are in a state of ritual purity.

2

Form the Intention (Niyyah)

Intend in your heart that you are praying two rak'ahs of Salat al-Istikhara to seek Allah's guidance on your specific matter.

3

Pray Two Rak'ahs

Pray two voluntary rak'ahs. It is recommended (Sunnah) to recite Surah Al-Kafirun (109) in the first rak'ah and Surah Al-Ikhlas (112) in the second, after Surah Al-Fatiha.

4

After Salam — Recite the Dua

After completing the two rak'ahs and saying the salam, raise your hands and recite the Istikhara dua below. At the marked point, mention your specific matter.

5

Trust and Proceed

After making the dua, trust in Allah's decree and move forward with your decision. Allah will facilitate what is best for you.

The Complete Istikhara Dua

Allaahumma innee astakheeruka bi 'ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika wa as'aluka min fadlika al-'azeem, fa innaka taqdiru wa laa aqdiru wa ta'lamu wa laa a'lamu wa Anta 'allaam al-ghuyoob. Allaahumma in kunta ta'lamu anna haadha al-amra [mention your matter] khayrun li fi deeni wa ma'aashi wa 'aaqibati amri, faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li thumma baarik li feehi. Translation: "O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge, and I seek ability by Your power, and I ask You from Your immense favour. For You have power and I have none, You know and I know not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter [mention your matter] is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and my affairs in the Hereafter, then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it. And if You know that this matter [mention your matter] is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and my affairs, then turn it away from me, and turn me away from it, and ordain for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it."
Sahih al-Bukhari 1166
💡 At the yellow highlighted point, mention your specific matter — either in Arabic or in your own language. For example: "this job", "this marriage", "this move". You say it twice in the dua.

Common Misconceptions

❌ Myth: "You must see a dream after Istikhara."
✅ Truth: There is no requirement for a dream. Guidance often comes through ease or difficulty in pursuing the matter, a sense of peace, or events unfolding naturally. Trust the process.
❌ Myth: "Someone else can pray Istikhara on your behalf."
✅ Truth: While others can make dua for you, the Istikhara dua is personal — "I seek Your guidance" — and should ideally be prayed by the person making the decision.
❌ Myth: "You must have already decided before praying Istikhara."
✅ Truth: Istikhara can be prayed when you are still undecided. It is about asking Allah to guide your heart and make the best path clear to you.
❌ Myth: "If you feel negative after Istikhara, the answer is no."
✅ Truth: Feelings alone are not a definitive indicator. Proceed with your decision and trust that Allah will facilitate what is best. If obstacles appear, that may be redirection.
