How to Pray Maghrib — The Sunset Prayer

A complete guide to the Maghrib prayer — 3 Fard rak'ahs (the only daily prayer with an odd Fard count), 2 Sunnah after, recitation explained, and why Maghrib time is short.

Overview of Maghrib Prayer

Maghrib is the fourth of the five daily prayers, prayed immediately after sunset. The Prophet ☮ said: "My Ummah will remain in goodness as long as they hasten to break the fast and do not delay Maghrib until the stars appear." (Ahmad — Hasan). Maghrib has the shortest window of any prayer — typically only 60–90 minutes.

Step-by-Step: How to Pray the 3 Fard Rak'ahs

1

Perform Wudu

Ensure ritual purity. See the Wudu guide. At Maghrib time try to already have wudu so you can pray immediately after the adhan.

2

Intention (Niyyah)

Form the intention in your heart: "I intend to pray 3 Fard rak'ahs of Maghrib, facing the Qibla, for the sake of Allah."

3

Takbiratul Ihram

Raise hands to ear level, say Allahu Akbar, lower hands and place right over left on chest.

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ Allahu Akbar — "Allah is the Greatest"
4

First Rak'ah — Al-Fatiha + Surah ALOUD

Recite Surah Al-Fatiha and a surah aloud. The Prophet ☮ would recite medium-length surahs in Maghrib (Al-Mursalat, At-Tur, etc.) in his personal prayer. Short surahs are also valid. Perform ruku', I'tidal, then two sujood.

5

Second Rak'ah — Al-Fatiha + Surah ALOUD → First Tashahhud

Same as the first rak'ah — recite aloud. After the two sujood, sit for the first Tashahhud: recite At-Tahiyyat only (not the full Salawat). Then stand for the third rak'ah without saying Tasleem.

التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ... At-Tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat... (up to: wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh)
6

Third Rak'ah — Al-Fatiha Only SILENT

Stand for the third rak'ah. Recite only Surah Al-Fatiha silently — no additional surah. Perform ruku' and two sujood.

7

Final Tashahhud and Tasleem

Sit after the third rak'ah's sujood. Recite:
1. At-Tahiyyat (full)
2. Salawat Ibrahimiyyah (blessings on the Prophet)
3. Optional: Dua (e.g., seeking refuge from punishment of the grave)
4. Tasleem to the right and left.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammad...
8

Pray 2 Sunnah Rak'ahs After

After the 3 Fard, pray 2 Sunnah rak'ahs — silently. These are Sunnah Mu'akkadah and complete the Maghrib prayer block.

⏱ Maghrib Time is Short — Don't Delay It:
Maghrib window is only 60–90 minutes in most cities. The Prophet ☮ encouraged praying Maghrib as soon as the adhan is called. If you're eating iftar (in Ramadan), break your fast with dates and water, pray Maghrib, then eat your full meal. Use the Muslim Friend app adhan alert for Maghrib.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rak'ahs is Maghrib prayer?
Maghrib has 3 Fard rak'ahs (obligatory) + 2 Sunnah after = 5 total. Some Hanafi scholars also note 2 optional nafl after the Sunnah. The 3 Fard rak'ahs make Maghrib the only daily prayer with an odd number of obligatory rak'ahs.
Is Maghrib aloud or silent?
Maghrib is a jahr (aloud) prayer for the first 2 rak'ahs — the imam and the praying person recite Al-Fatiha and surahs audibly. The 3rd rak'ah is silent. This is the same pattern as Isha (first 2 aloud, the rest silent). Dhuhr and Asr are entirely silent.
What time is Maghrib prayer?
Maghrib begins at sunset and ends when the red twilight (shafaq ahmar) disappears — typically 60–90 minutes after sunset. It is the shortest window of any prayer. Find your exact Maghrib time at the prayer times page.
Why does Maghrib have 3 rak'ahs, not 2 or 4?
The number of rak'ahs was established by the Prophet ☮ through prophetic practice (Sunnah), not by a single Quranic verse specifying the count. The 3-rak'ah Maghrib is established by mass-transmitted narration (Mutawatir) with no disagreement among scholars. Witir (odd number) is a characteristic Allah loves, and Maghrib's 3 rak'ahs reflect this.
Can I combine Maghrib and Isha?
Yes — combining (jam') Maghrib with Isha is permitted when travelling, in heavy rain, or due to genuine hardship. A traveller may pray Maghrib (3 rak'ahs) combined with Isha (2 rak'ahs when shortened/qasr). This is an established Sunnah from the Farewell Pilgrimage and Tabuk expedition.
