A complete beginner's guide to Asr: the 4-rak'ah Fard prayer, the optional Sunnah, when Asr time ends, and why Allah called it "the middle prayer" in the Quran.
Asr is the third of the five daily prayers and the one specifically protected in the Quran. Allah says: "Guard the prayers and the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in devout obedience." (Al-Baqarah 2:238). The Prophet ☮ also said: "Whoever prays the two cool prayers (Fajr and Asr) will enter Paradise." (Bukhari & Muslim)
Ensure you have wudu before praying. See the Wudu guide or What Breaks Wudu.
The 4 Sunnah before Asr are not Mu'akkadah (not as strongly insisted upon as Fajr's 2 Sunnah), but the Prophet ☮ made dua for those who pray them: "May Allah have mercy on the person who prays 4 rak'ahs before Asr." (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi). Pray them in two sets of 2 with tasleem between each pair.
The 4 Fard rak'ahs of Asr follow the exact same structure as Dhuhr. Asr is a silent (sirr) prayer — all recitation is quiet.
Form the intention: "I intend to pray 4 Fard rak'ahs of Asr, for the sake of Allah."
Raise hands to ear level, say Allahu Akbar, lower hands and place right over left on chest. Recite the opening supplication (Thana) quietly.
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ Allahu Akbar — "Allah is the Greatest"Recite Surah Al-Fatiha silently, then add any surah. Perform ruku', I'tidal, then two sujood with the sitting in between.
Recite Al-Fatiha + any surah silently. After two sujood, sit and recite At-Tahiyyat only (no Salawat yet). Then stand for the third rak'ah without Tasleem.
Recite only Surah Al-Fatiha (no additional surah) in the third and fourth rak'ahs. Perform ruku' and two sujood.
Recite Al-Fatiha only. After two sujood, sit for the final tashahhud: recite At-Tahiyyat, then Salawat Ibrahimiyyah, then Dua (optional), then Tasleem both sides.
Turn right: السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ then turn left and repeat. Asr is now complete.
Asr begins when the shadow of any object is equal to the object's length (Hanafi: twice the length) plus the shadow at noon. In practice, Asr starts roughly 3–4 hours after Dhuhr. It ends at sunset — though the preferred time is before the sun turns yellow (approximately 1 hour before sunset). Asr prayed after the sun turns yellow is valid but disliked.
