A complete guide to the Dhuhr prayer: 4 Sunnah before, 4 Fard, and 2 Sunnah after — with Arabic recitations, transliteration, and tips for praying at work or school.
Dhuhr is the second of the five daily prayers, prayed after the sun passes its highest point (zenith). The Prophet ☮ said: "Whoever consistently prays 4 rak'ahs before Dhuhr and 4 after it — Allah will forbid the Fire from touching him." (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi — Hasan Sahih)
All prayers require ritual purity. Make wudu before praying — see the complete Wudu guide for the step-by-step process. If you broke wudu after making it, see What Breaks Wudu.
Pray 4 Sunnah rak'ahs in two sets of 2 (tasleem after each 2). These are Sunnah Mu'akkadah — the Prophet ☮ observed them consistently. The full spiritual reward of Dhuhr is earned by completing all 10 rak'ahs.
The 4 Fard rak'ahs of Dhuhr are prayed silently. Here is each step:
Form the intention in your heart: "I intend to pray 4 Fard rak'ahs of Dhuhr, facing the Qibla, for the sake of Allah." No verbal intention is required.
Raise your hands to ear level (men) or shoulder level (women) and say:
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ Allahu Akbar — "Allah is the Greatest"Lower your hands and place right hand over left on your chest. Then recite the opening supplication (Thana) quietly.
Recite Surah Al-Fatiha silently, then follow with any surah or verses. Dhuhr is a silent prayer — all recitation is in your heart or very softly. Perform ruku' (bow), I'tidal (stand straight), then two sujood (prostrations) with the sitting in between.
Perform the second rak'ah identically. After the two sujood, sit for the first Tashahhud and recite At-Tahiyyat only. Then stand for the third rak'ah without Tasleem.
التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ At-Tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu 'alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh...In the third rak'ah, recite only Surah Al-Fatiha — no additional surah. This applies to the fourth rak'ah too. Perform ruku' and two sujood as normal.
Same as the third. After the two sujood, sit for the final Tashahhud. Recite At-Tahiyyat, then Salawat Ibrahimiyyah (blessings on the Prophet), then end with Tasleem.
Turn your head to the right and say:
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahThen turn to the left and repeat. The 4 Fard rak'ahs are now complete.
After the Fard, pray 2 Sunnah rak'ahs. These are Sunnah Mu'akkadah with great reward. Praying all the Sunnah around Dhuhr builds a strong house in Jannah according to an authentic hadith (Tirmidhi).
Dhuhr is a silent (sirr) prayer. Unlike Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha — where the imam recites the first two rak'ahs aloud in congregation — in Dhuhr (and Asr), everyone recites silently, including the imam. This is Sunnah established by consistent prophetic practice and scholarly consensus.
For adult Muslim men, the Friday Jumu'ah prayer replaces Dhuhr entirely. The Friday prayer consists of two khutbahs (sermons) followed by 2 Fard rak'ahs in congregation. If you miss Jumu'ah without a valid excuse, it is sinful — but if you miss it with a valid reason (illness, travel, etc.), pray 4 rak'ahs of Dhuhr instead.
