Introduction to Surah Yaseen
Surah Yaseen (also written Ya-Sin or Yasin) is the 36th chapter of the Quran. It contains 83 verses and was revealed in Makkah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ called it "the Heart of the Quran" (Tirmidhi), and it is one of the most frequently recited surahs by Muslims around the world.
يسٓ وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ ٱلْحَكِيمِ إِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ عَلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
"Ya-Sin. By the Wise Quran. Indeed you are among the messengers, on a straight path."
— Quran 36:1-4
Why Is It Called "The Heart of the Quran"?
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Everything has a heart, and the heart of the Quran is Yaseen." (Tirmidhi)
Scholars explain this title in several ways:
- Just as the heart is the most vital organ of the body, Surah Yaseen contains the most essential messages of the Quran
- It covers all three foundational themes of the Quran: Tawhid (oneness of God), Risalah (Prophethood) and Akhirah (the Hereafter)
- It moves the heart of the reader with its powerful imagery of resurrection, past nations, and the signs of Allah in creation
