What is dhikr in Islam?

Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) refers to words, phrases and supplications used to glorify, praise and remember Allah. Examples include Subhanallah (Glory be to Allah), Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greatest) and La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah). The Quran says: 'Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.' (13:28)

How many times should I say SubhanAllah each day?

The Prophet ﷺ recommended saying SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar 33 times each after every prayer — totalling 99 tasbeeh per prayer, completing 100 with La ilaha illallah wahdahu (Bukhari, Muslim). He also said: 'Whoever says SubhanAllah 100 times daily, 1,000 good deeds are written for him and 1,000 sins are erased.' (Muslim)

The Prophet ﷺ said the best words are four: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar (Muslim). Also highly recommended throughout the day: Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi (100 times — erases sins even if they are like sea foam, Bukhari) and La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (a treasure from Jannah, Bukhari).

What is the difference between morning adhkar and evening adhkar?

Morning adhkar are recited after Fajr prayer until noon — they include specific duas for protection, health, sustenance, and faith for the day ahead. Evening adhkar are recited after Asr prayer until sunset — they mirror the morning ones and include seeking protection for the night. Can I do dhikr without wudu?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Dhikr does not require wudu. You can say SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, and other forms of remembrance at any time and in any state. However, reciting the Quran while in a state of major impurity (janabah) is not permitted according to the majority of scholars.
