What Is Hadith? A Guide to Prophetic Traditions

Hadith (ุญุฏูŠุซ) refers to the recorded sayings, actions, and tacit approvals of the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ. Together with the Quran, the Sunnah (prophetic tradition) forms the foundation of Islamic law and practice. There are thousands of authenticated hadiths preserved across the major hadith collections, which scholars have painstakingly verified over centuries.

Each hadith has two parts: the isnad (chain of narrators tracing back to the Prophet ๏ทบ) and the matn (the actual text of the saying or action). Islamic hadith scholarship (ilm al-hadith) developed rigorous methods to grade hadiths as Sahih (authentic), Hasan (good), Da'if (weak), or Mawdu' (fabricated).

Hadith Library โ€” Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim?
Both are the two most authentic hadith collections and are together called al-Sahihayn (the Two Sahihs). Imam al-Bukhari prioritised the strictest conditions for narrator reliability โ€” Sahih Bukhari is generally considered slightly more rigorous. Sahih Muslim pays more attention to the completeness and consistency of the chain of narrators. Both are authoritative sources for Islamic practice.
What does Sahih mean?
Sahih (ุตุญูŠุญ) means โ€œauthenticโ€ or โ€œsoundโ€. A hadith is graded Sahih when its chain of narrators is unbroken, every narrator is trustworthy and has a good memory, the hadith does not contradict more reliable sources, and there is no hidden defect ('illah). Below Sahih is Hasan (good), then Da'if (weak).
How many hadiths are in the Sahih Bukhari?
Sahih al-Bukhari contains approximately 7,563 hadiths (with repetitions; around 2,602 unique hadiths). Imam Bukhari reportedly reviewed 600,000 hadiths and selected only the ones that met his strict criteria of authenticity.
Are these hadiths in Arabic and English?
Yes โ€” Muslim Friend's Hadith Library shows hadiths in English translation. Arabic text is available for select hadiths where sourced. The database covers 7 major collections with thousands of individual hadiths.
What are the Kutub al-Sittah?
The Kutub al-Sittah (ูƒุชุจ ุงู„ุณุชุฉ), or Six Books, are the six most authoritative hadith collections in Sunni Islam: Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawud, Jami at-Tirmidhi, Sunan an-Nasaโ€™i, and Sunan Ibn Majah. Muslim Friend's library includes all six plus the Muwatta of Imam Malik.
